For this Durham Minor Cup game coaches Paul Larkin and Stewart Bath made the decision to rotate the squad by including some of the regular substitutes into the starting eleven. Wolvo took the game to Athletic and after only 5 mins Chris Cotterill passed to James Corkish who lobbed keeper Daniel Grant but hit the side netting. Athletic counter attacked 3 mins later when Ben Baldwin found himself through but central defender Sam O'Gorman made a superb last ditch tackle to dispossess the striker. On 25 mins Cotterill found Jamie Roberts whose first time shot was clawed away for a corner by Grant. From the resultant corner taken by Robbie Gratton striker Jamie Roberts made amends by scoring from close range to put Wolvo ahead. A minute later Liam Enderwick shot wide with Wolvo now on top. On 37 mins a corner by Gratton was met to perfection by Roberts whose powerful accurate header was saved superbly by Grant. A minute later Athletics Baldwin hit the post followed by Lee Bishop shooting wide with the visitors pushing for the leveller.

Washington deservedly equalised 7 mins into the 2nd period when Dan Foster wheedled his way clear and drove home from 6 yards. This prompted the Wolvo coaches to bring on experience from the bench to try to save the game. On 62 mins Kallen Waterman in the home goal made a brave save at the feet of sub Jake Carr to prevent Athletic from taking the lead. Lewis Snaith then put Elliott Pledger clear but he snatched at his shot and ballooned the ball over the bar. On 78 mins Pledger was chopped down by Ethan Hudspeth to concede a penalty which Jae Wilson as usual despatched with aplomb to restore Wolvos lead. Athletic thought they had equalised with 5 mins remaining when Dan Paton nudged home but his effort was ruled out for offside. With a minute left Pledger shot wide from a promising position but Wolvo saw the game out to progress to the next round.
