A Ground Hoppers Take on An Afternoon at Metcalfe Park

Great ground and lovely people, well worth a visit!
- Angus Taylor

Last weekend we had the pleasure of hosting Angus Taylor, when he decided to make the trip down to Metcalfe Park from his home town of Morpeth...

"One thing that I’ve noticed whilst visiting different football grounds, is the broad variety of Groundhopper that you encounter. Groundhoppers often don’t have a specific team that they follow, choosing to unburden themselves of season tickets to allow freedom to roam!

There are some seriously dedicated travellers out there and of course, there is also what I call the “black dog” groundhopper. You know the type, if your dog’s black, theirs is blacker, they paid more for it and got a bigger discount! If you’ve been to Tenerife, then they’ve been to Elevenerife!

That said, you also come across very generous Groundhoppers, who will do their very best to steer you towards hidden gems and grounds you may never have heard of before. On more than one occasion I was encouraged to make sure I gave Wolviston a visit, and that my friends is exactly what I did last weekend!

Wolviston is located about 2 miles down the road from Wynyard Hall near Billingham. It’s a straight- forward drive down the A1 and then across country, taking about an hour in total.

Wolviston are currently in the Wearside League and play their home games at Metcalfe Park. It’s a wonderfully picturesque setting, which has two large trees behind one of the goals, looking almost like some sort of natural “Game of Thrones” type goalposts!

Having applied to join the Northern League next season, Wolviston have passed all their gradings and are working their way towards securing funding for the installation of floodlights.

The Manager is a lovely guy called Chris Lax, who kindly took time out before kick-off, for a chat with me about the club. It’s immediately obvious that there are a lot of dedicated people doing some great work at Wolviston. They really do have a multi -tasking approach and run numerous junior football teams within their set up, all of which would make them a welcome addition to Step 6.

The game I saw was against the strangely named Farringdon Detached FC! It didn’t take Wolviston long to detach Farringdon from the points, with two quick fire goals in the first 6 minutes. Thereafter, Wolviston missed a hatful of chances with there being no further scoring.

Manger Lax was continually demanding high standards and levels of concentration, during a game his side never looked like losing, especially with a defence marshalled by Morpeth Town old boy Callum Williams!"
