On Saturday 18 July, Wolviston FC will honour one of the greatest servants in the club’s history as the First Team and Veterans come together for the Brian Jones Memorial Match and stand renaming.

Some people play for a football club.

Some manage it.

Some volunteer.

Very few dedicate almost every chapter of their lives to it.

Brian Jones did all of those things.

After Brian’s passing in August 2025, following an incredible 66 years of service to Wolviston FC, it quickly became clear that his contribution deserved to be remembered in a lasting and meaningful way. The Brian Jones Memorial Match has been created to do exactly that.

On Saturday 18 July, the current Wolviston FC First Team will take on Wolviston FC Veterans at Metcalfe Park in a fixture that celebrates not only Brian’s remarkable life, but everything he stood for.

The memorial match has been established so future generations understand the importance of people like Brian. It is an opportunity for former players, current members, volunteers, supporters and the wider community to come together, share memories and celebrate a life devoted to grassroots football.

The fixture also serves as a reminder that clubs like Wolviston FC are built not only by those who wear the shirt on a Saturday afternoon, but by those whose hard work often happens long before kick-off and long after the final whistle.

Brian’s influence can still be seen throughout Metcalfe Park, in the facilities he helped care for, in the club’s stability, and in the welcoming community he helped nurture over more than six decades.

While the result on the day will matter to those pulling on a Wolviston shirt, the true purpose of the occasion is far greater.

It is about honouring a man whose legacy continues to inspire everyone connected with the club.

More than simply a match, the day is an opportunity for former players, volunteers, supporters, friends, family and the wider community to come together to celebrate a remarkable life and remember a man who gave so much to so many.
