Wolviston Ladies came away disappointed not to take something from a closely fought contest against Chester-le-Street Amazons, a side who finished an impressive fourth in the league last season.

As newcomers to the division, Wolviston once again showed they are more than capable of competing at this level.

The opening stages were evenly matched, with both teams looking to get the ball down and play despite strong winds making conditions difficult throughout.

It was the Amazons who struck first, taking the lead after around 25 minutes with a long-range effort.

Wolviston responded well and the introduction of Vic Greenwood made an immediate impact. From a tight angle, Vic unleashed a powerful strike to bring Wolvo level and send the sides into the break at 1-1.

The visitors started the second half strongly, moving the ball well and taking control of the scoreline as they opened up a 3-1 advantage.

But Wolviston kept playing.

With around 15 minutes remaining, Vic looked to have grabbed her second and pulled Wolvo back to 3-2, only for the goal to be ruled out despite appearing perfectly good.

Rather than let the decision knock them, Wolviston piled on the pressure.

Jess Wallace then fashioned an opportunity under pressure and found the inside of the post to make it 3-2, setting up a tense finish.

The Amazons were certainly the happier side to hear the final whistle, holding on for all three points, while Wolviston were left feeling they had done enough to deserve something from the game.

Plenty of positives again for a team still finding its feet in a new league, particularly the determination to keep playing football and pushing right until the end.

It was also great to see both teams stay behind together in the clubhouse afterwards.
