Wolviston United 4-2 Seaton Carew
Metcalfe Park
Wolviston FC United led out by their newly picked captain Isla Blake got off to a flying start at Metcalfe Park Arena and never looked back in an entertaining 4-2 win over Seaton Carew.
It took just minutes to open the scoring. Jess, causing all sorts of trouble in and around the box, ended up being brought down, and up stepped the ever-reliable Sophie Antoniou to slot home from the penalty spot for an early 1-0 lead.
Wolviston were comfortably on top as the game went end to end, but a brief lapse in concentration allowed a determined and physical Seaton Carew side back into the game.
The response after half time was immediate. A lung-bursting run down the right from Sophie ended with a strike that was well saved by the keeper; Cara reacted quickest to the rebound and slotted home to make it 2-1.
The lead didn’t last long. A free kick given away on the edge of the box saw Seaton’s number ten test Layken with a strong effort. Layken saved well, but the ball dropped kindly for one of their strikers to head home and level it again at 2-2.
Back came Wolviston. On 75 minutes, a Grace cross was handled in the box and up stepped Sophie again to squeeze it past a good attempted save from Hayley, low down to the keeper’s right, to restore the lead at 3-2.
With Wolviston now well on top, the fourth arrived with five minutes left. A brilliant through ball found Jess Price, who finished it off to seal a 4-2 win and put the result beyond doubt.
This was a real team effort from front to back. Bella was brilliant in the first half, up and down that left wing, while Grace matched her for energy throughout. Carmen, Isla and Ellie Minto were solid as ever at the back, and Cara was full of running on the right. In midfield, Ava was composed and detailed in her passing, Katie was solid as a rock at CDM, and Izzy looked exceptional as ever! Erin tortured their defender all afternoon and on another day could have created or scored a few. Kait slotted in well at left centre-back when she came on, some real glimpses of quality from Georgia Martin, and all three keepers, Hayley, Courtney and Layken did their bit between the posts.
That result means Wolviston finish preseason unbeaten, winning five and drawing one, and having conceded just two goals from open play across the entire campaign, a hugely encouraging platform to build on heading into the season.
Lady of the Match: Abbey Tregear, outstanding in the centre of midfield, winning the ball back, picking out passes, and composed throughout.
