History was made this weekend as the Wolviston United Ladies stepped out together for the very first competitive game in the team’s history.

The trip to Darlington took us into the unknown, an RA side we knew very little about, but any first-day nerves were quickly settled on a pitch that was in pristine condition, exactly the surface this group wants to play their football on.

And play it they did. Wolviston started brightly, moving the ball around with real composure and knocking it through the lines with confidence you wouldn’t associate with a team’s first outing. The pressure told on 8 minutes. Some typically strong battling from Jess Price won the ball back, it broke to Sophie Antoniou, and our number 10 found a pocket of space just inside the box before bending it beautifully into the bottom right corner. 1–0, and the perfect start.

Credit to Darlington RA, who grew into the half and, with ten minutes to the break, looked the more likely to find an equaliser. But football has a habit of ignoring the run of play, and against it, Jess got herself in on goal, put the keeper under real pressure and finished to make it 2–0 right on the stroke of half time. Her first of the afternoon, and going in two goals up having ridden a spell of pressure was exactly the platform we wanted.

The message from the management at the break was clear: the first ten minutes of the second half would be crucial.
Stay focused from their set pieces, don’t invite pressure onto ourselves, and shut down anything from around the box.

As always, the ladies listened, and delivered. A brilliant ball through from Ava released Jess on the edge of the area, who rounded the keeper and slotted home for her second of the day, 3–0, and daylight between the teams.

From there, the Sophie Antoniou show took over. Around ten minutes later she pounced on a bouncing ball on the edge of the box and, with genuinely impressive technique, took it on the half volley and lashed it into the top right corner. 4–0, and you could see the enjoyment radiating through the whole side.

Darlington never gave up, they stayed physical and kept pushing, but Sophie had the final word, manipulating the ball onto that wand of a left foot and rifling another into the top corner to complete a superb hat-trick. 5–0.

Around the pitch
A clean sheet is a team effort, and this one had contributions all over the park. Hayley was solid in goal for the first half, pulling off a couple of important saves when called upon, and when Layken took over between the sticks in the second half she was every bit as reliable, making two really good stops of her own.
In front of them, the back line was excellent. Bella was outstanding, the pick of the players from a management point of view, while Isla was her usual composed self, comfortable in possession and reading the game superbly throughout. Georgia repaid the faith after earning her place in the starting eleven off the back of some great preseason performances, and she didn’t disappoint. Carmen, once again, was strong and confident whenever tested.
Through the middle we had real quality on the ball, with Emily, Abbey and Ava dictating things in midfield, while Izzy and Katie guarded the back line in that CDM role with real confidence and maturity. Up top and all over, the work rate never dropped, Cara was relentless from first whistle to last, and Jess simply never stopped running, capping her afternoon off with two goals.

The opposition named Sophie Antoniou as their Player of the Match, and it’s hard to argue. Pretty much flawless from start to finish, a hat-trick to remember, and a fitting name on the scoresheet for a landmark day.

A first competitive game, a clean sheet, five goals, and a group that clearly loves playing together. If this is the start, the future looks very bright indeed.
