United’s unbeaten start comes to an end, but the response after a difficult opening showed exactly what this group is made of.

MATCH REPORT | Wolviston United 0–3 Consett

Yesterday brought a tough afternoon for Wolviston United as the girls suffered their first defeat since the team’s inception.

As with every game, the coaching team had researched the opposition and set up accordingly, starting with a back four, two central midfielders and three attacking midfielders behind a lone striker.

It became clear early on, though, that the shape wasn’t working as planned.

Consett put United under heavy pressure from the outset and were able to exploit the space left in midfield. The visitors opened the scoring with a strike from the edge of the box before adding a second shortly afterwards with an effort United could do little about.

There were also some big moments that went against Wolviston in that opening half.

United felt they should have had at least one penalty, possibly two. The biggest talking point came when Erin raced through one-on-one, rounded the goalkeeper and was brought down in what appeared to be inside the penalty area.

Instead, the referee judged the challenge to have taken place outside the box and awarded a free-kick, with the goalkeeper shown only a yellow card. On another day, it could have been a huge turning point in the match.

Around 25 minutes in, United recognised the problems with the original set-up and reverted to the shape the girls know best.

Despite missing some key personnel, the change helped the team settle into the game.

At half-time, the message was simple: keep moving the ball, make Consett work and trust that opportunities would come.

The girls responded well.

United moved the ball much more freely after the break and made further positional changes in an attempt to expose the visitors. For the final 20 minutes, Wolviston threw even more at the game, sacrificing the holding midfielder and pushing a second player up front.

It didn’t quite produce the breakthrough, but United created four or five decent opportunities and gave Consett plenty to think about.

With Wolviston pushing for a way back into the contest, the visitors eventually caught them with a late sucker punch to make it 3–0.

The final score probably didn’t reflect how competitive the second half became, and on another afternoon, with a little more fortune and some of those chances converted, the margin could have been much closer.

It was a new feeling for a group that had never tasted defeat before, but there were still plenty of positives to take from the response.

This team has made a brilliant start to its journey and yesterday was another part of that learning process.

Player of the Match: Bella

Bella was outstanding throughout. She was excellent at left-back before adapting just as well to left wing-back following the tactical change. A composed, determined and really solid performance.

Next up: Darlington Young Bulls.

We learn, we move forward and we go again.
