The Villagers defeat League Champions Darlington Town 5-3 with a magnificent display of attacking football!

Playing League Champions and two time cup winners Darlington Town it was a huge ask for Wolviston in their battle to avoid relegation to get some form of result but they rose to the occasion in stunning style. After only 5 mins a free kick by Mikey McGee was saved by keeper Cameron Hall and the rebound fell to Callum Blair who scored with an acute angled shot but his effort was ruled out for offside. 4 mins later Wolvo took the lead when Blair in his own half fed McGee who outstripped his defender and squared the ball to Matty Wilshaw who knocked home from close range. On 17 mins Elliott Pledger for Darlington was put clear but Chris Davidson in the visitors goal defied the laws of physics with an incredible save to deny the ex Wolviston striker. The speedy winger on 23 mins found himself clear again and although his shot was again saved by Davidson the ball eventually rebounded to Ben Wood who scored with ease into an empty net to draw Town level. On 31 mins a free kick by McGee went inches wide followed a minute later with keeper Hall saving Wolvistons strikers shot. Town took the lead on 34 mins after a hopeful punt into the box caused problems for the visiting keeper and defence which resulted in Ben Wood scoring his 2nd of the game.
H.T. 2-1
Within 5 mins of the restart McGee was cruelly hacked down on the edge of the box by Cameron Holliday and Wolvo skipper Stewart Bath confidently drove home into the bottom corner past an unsighted keeper Hall. On 58 mins Towns sub Jacob Wood tried his luck with a long range effort which went inches wide of the post. Wolviston took the lead on 66 mins after Jack O'Gorman on the right crossed to Matty Wilshaw who turned and drove a beauty into the corner of the net. This lasted only 2 mins as Town equalised when the Wolvo defence failed to clear and allowed Ben Wood to strike a thunderbolt past Davidson to record his hat trick and push for the leagues golden boot award for leading scorer. Wolviston retook the lead on 72 mins after good work by Wilshaw was rewarded with Mitchell Noble showing quick feet to drill home. The scoring was complete with 14 mins remaining when that man Wilshaw was busy again down the left, this time crossing to sub Robbie Gratton whose shot went in off defender James Morley to increase Wolvos lead.
F.T. 3-5
This result now means a relegation decider on Saturday 11th May where the mighty Wolvo have to win by 6 clear goals to send Shotton C.W. into the 1st division and on this last performance it is certainly not beyond their capability!
