Wolvo look to keep to winning ways in 2025 as they visit Wynyard Village FC in a local derby game on the astro turf of Bede college.
With the wind at their backs Wolvo started with a high intensity and wanted to use the conditions to their advantage and what a start it was, just on 5 minutes Robbie had a glorious chance from 5 yards out but miscued his right footed shot wide.
It took Wynyard 10 minutes to mount their first meaningful attack when Wray headed over the top from a few yards out, the game then started to be played in the Wynyard half, Cotterill headed just wide on 12, a speculative shot on 16 minutes from over 20 yards from Blair went just over the top. On 22 Wolvo got the break through, a long throw in by Geldart aiming for Blair saw him flick on to Lewis Snaith to bravely head home, only 4 minutes later Gratton took a corner and using the wind to his advantage he deceived the keeper to score direct and make it 2-0.
Wolvo were forced into an early substitution with Snaith having to come off and young Geary replacing him. This did not sway Wolvo’s flow and they played some good controlling football. On 35 Robbie had another corner and this time aimed to the back post with Cotterill waiting to head back right into the goal mouth & Blair was on hand to dive low and bravely and head in, note it was unclear if the ref had blown and to be sure in the melee Roberts made 100% sure, the goal was given to Blair by the Wolvo sideline not the reporter and who cares it was a goal to Wolvo ?
The final action of the half saw Blair steal the ball just in his own half and he burst forward to unleash a shot from 30 yards which brough a great stretching save by Metcalf in the home team goal.
Half Time 3-0
The second half was expected to be a tougher affair for Wolvo playing into the wind, what was pleasing as a supporter was the control and team work from the whole squad throughout the 45 minutes with everyone putting in a good shift. This team work was shown on 73 when great work from Mavi saw him play in Blair down the right and with only one defender between him and the goal he made the right choice to simply square the ball to Geary to slot past the keeper to make it 4-0. Just as Club President was talking about a clean sheet Wynyard’s Carter shot from the edge of the box to reduce the deficit. The last 10 minutes saw Wolvo continue playing as a team, Wilson & Gratton working their socks off in the centre of midfield to close down, the defence tackling well & the wide midfielders and boys up front challenging at every opportunity. A great team performance and 3 points.
Full time 4-1 to Wolvo
