A Day to Remember as Wolviston FC Honours Brian Jones

A Day to Remember as Wolviston FC Honours Brian Jones

Helen Bigerstaff

The Wolviston FC family came together for a memorable afternoon at Metcalfe Park, celebrating the life and legacy of Brian Jones with laughter, memories, football and the official unveiling of The Brian Jones Stand.

There are some days that are about far more than football, and Saturday's Brian Jones Memorial Match was one of them.

Metcalfe Park was filled with familiar faces as generations of Wolviston FC players, volunteers, supporters and friends reunited to celebrate the life of a man whose contribution to the club can never truly be measured. It was a day of reflection, remembrance and, just as Brian would have wanted, plenty of laughter as old teammates caught up, shared stories and relived memories from years gone by.

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to everyone who helped organise the day. From those working behind the scenes to the volunteers serving food and drinks, every contribution helped create an occasion that Brian would have been proud of.

Before the football began, everyone gathered for the official unveiling of The Brian Jones Stand. Keith delivered a heartfelt speech, speaking movingly about Brian's dedication, friendship and unwavering commitment to Wolviston FC. It was a fitting tribute that perfectly captured what Brian meant to so many people connected with the club.

Brian's wife, Wynn, together with their daughters, then had the honour of unveiling the newly named stand, ensuring Brian's place in the history of Metcalfe Park will be remembered for generations to come. The ceremony continued as Brian's granddaughter, Harper, proudly unveiled the commemorative plaque, which will tell every future visitor to Metcalfe Park why the stand proudly bears Brian's name. It was another emotional moment before Harper and her sister Amelia had the privilege of kicking off the Brian Jones Memorial Match, officially getting the afternoon's football underway.

What followed was exactly what everyone had hoped for.

Former players, current players and the next generation of Wolvo stars all pulled on the shirts with pride, producing a competitive, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable match. There were moments of quality, plenty of smiles and no shortage of commitment, with every player giving everything in what proved to be a fitting tribute to a true club legend.

Around the ground, supporters enjoyed the occasion just as much as the football. The Snack Shack was kept busy throughout the afternoon, serving plenty of food and refreshments, while Brian's Baby Guinness – our newest menu addition created especially for the day – quickly became a firm favourite with many in attendance.

As the final whistle blew, the result felt almost secondary.

The true success of the day was seeing the Wolviston FC family together once again, celebrating one of its own and creating new memories alongside the old ones. Brian's influence on this football club continues to be felt every single day, and thanks to the generosity, hard work and support of everyone involved, his legacy now has a permanent home overlooking the pitch he loved so much.

Thank you to everyone who attended, played, volunteered, supported and helped make the Brian Jones Memorial Match such a special occasion.

Brian Jones will always be part of Wolviston FC. Forever remembered. Forever part of the Pack.
