Jarrow Reserves 3–1 Wolviston FC
Wolviston FC returned from their trip to Jarrow Reserves empty-handed on Saturday afternoon, despite a bright start, some determined defending and a second-half fightback that briefly threatened to turn the contest around.
Wolvo started strongly, taking the game to their hosts and enjoying plenty of possession in the opening stages. However, it was Jarrow who fashioned the first real opportunity when Cole Cairns found himself in space at close range, only to see his effort superbly pushed away by Wolviston goalkeeper Ezard.
The visitors responded well, continuing to see plenty of the ball and looking to build their attacks, but clear-cut opportunities proved difficult to come by.
At the other end, Ezard was proving to be a key figure. The Wolvo stopper came to the rescue twice more before the break, firstly denying Liam Baxter and then producing a full-length diving save to keep out a powerful drive from Cairns.
Despite Jarrow creating the better chances, Wolviston's resilience ensured the sides went into the interval all square.
Half-time: Jarrow Reserves 0–0 Wolviston FC
Unfortunately for Wolvo, the second half began with a frustrating spell that would ultimately decide the contest.
Just five minutes after the restart, Jarrow broke the deadlock. A deep cross from Callum Arthur found Cole Cairns arriving at the far post, and he made no mistake with a volley to put the hosts ahead.
Before Wolviston had time to regroup, the deficit doubled. Just two minutes later, an effort from Aaron Stark was diverted into his own net by Jae Wilson, leaving Wolvo with a mountain to climb.
But the lads weren't about to roll over.
Showing character and determination, Wolviston hit back in the 57th minute. A scramble inside the Jarrow penalty area saw the ball fall kindly to Marcus Allen, who kept his composure and made no mistake from eight yards to pull one back.
Game on!
At 2–1, Wolvo had given themselves a lifeline and were right back in the contest. Having worked hard to get a foothold in the game, the visitors now had something to build on as they searched for an equaliser.
Changes followed as Wolviston looked to find a way back, with Laylan replacing Charlie in the 74th minute and Watson coming on for Webb in the 80th.
However, with Wolvo looking to get themselves level, Jarrow struck again in the closing stages.
In the 86th minute, Aaron Stark capitalised on a defensive error to find himself with a simple finish into an empty net, restoring the hosts' two-goal advantage and effectively putting the result beyond reach.
There was further frustration for Wolviston in the final minute when substitute Watson was shown a sin-bin for dissent.
Full-time: Jarrow Reserves 3–1 Wolviston FC
It was a disappointing afternoon for Wolvo, particularly after a promising opening and the determination shown to get back into the game following Jarrow's quick-fire double.
There were positives to take, not least some excellent goalkeeping in the first half, spells of good possession and the character shown to respond when two goals behind.
Ultimately, though, Jarrow were more clinical when their opportunities arrived, while Wolviston will be frustrated that individual errors proved costly.
The challenge now is to turn those encouraging passages of play into more clear-cut chances and ensure that the hard work being put in across the pitch is rewarded with points.
Plenty to work on, but plenty to keep building on too.
We stick together, we keep working, and we go again.
