Wolviston continued their positive start to the new campaign with a hard-fought 3–2 victory over neighbours Wynyard Village in an entertaining local derby.

There was barely time for the game to settle before Wolvo began applying the pressure, and that bright opening was rewarded after just seven minutes.

Jake Large found skipper Jae Wilson inside the area and Jae made no mistake, crashing the ball home from around ten yards to give Wolviston the perfect start.

The lead lasted only a couple of minutes. Wynyard responded from a corner and Luke Spence was on hand to bundle the ball home to make it 1–1.

It quickly became an end-to-end contest. Marcus Allen tested the visiting keeper with a sharp effort that was tipped over, but it was Wynyard who struck next. Spence found space around the edge of the box and drove home his second to turn the game around.

1–2, and suddenly Wolvo had some work to do.

The response was exactly what was needed.

Wolviston continued to push forward and, on 24 minutes, a goalmouth scramble ended with Jake Large forcing the ball home from close range.

Back level. 2–2.

The remainder of the half stayed fiercely competitive, with neither side willing to give an inch, and the teams went into the break all square.

Wolvo were handed a golden opportunity to regain the lead shortly after the restart when Marcus was brought down and the referee pointed to the spot. Jake stepped up, but his penalty was kept out by the Wynyard goalkeeper.

It could have knocked the momentum out of the hosts. Instead, Wolvo kept going.

They began to take greater control of the contest, creating a number of opportunities during a sustained spell of pressure. The winning goal wouldn’t come easily, but the performance showed patience and a determination to keep playing.

That persistence finally paid off in the 73rd minute.

Some excellent work from Marcus Allen created the opening before his deep delivery travelled across the area and found Louie Evans arriving at the far post.

Louie did the rest.

3–2 Wolvo.

From there it became about seeing the job through. Wynyard continued to compete and Wolviston had to remain switched on right through the closing stages, but the lads stood firm to secure another three points.

There was also a deserved Man of the Match performance from Will Clapham, who covered seemingly every blade of grass. Will battled from first whistle to last, remained composed in possession and played a huge part in Wolvo taking control of the midfield.

After the game, coach Stewart Bath felt the display represented further progress from the group: “It seemed to be another step forward in terms of performance and application.”

And that probably sums the evening up nicely.

Not everything went Wolvo’s way. They fell behind, missed a penalty and had to work for every inch against determined local opposition.

But they kept playing, kept battling and found a way.

Another three points. Another step forward. Come on Wolvo!
