FIVE-STAR WOLVO TURN IT ON AT METCALFE PARK

FIVE-STAR WOLVO TURN IT ON AT METCALFE PARK

Helen Bigerstaff

Wolviston recover from an early setback to hit FC Hartlepool Reserves for five, with James Webb’s late double putting the finishing touches on an impressive afternoon.

Wolviston FC produced an excellent response to going behind as they powered to a 5–1 victory over FC Hartlepool Reserves at Metcalfe Park in the Wearside League First Division.

Wolvo started brightly and created the better of the early opportunities, but were made to pay for not taking them when Lewis Scott gave the visitors the lead after 17 minutes.

The response was almost immediate.

Just three minutes later, Jacob Watson delivered into the danger area and Cottrell was on hand to turn the ball home and deservedly bring Wolvo level.

From there, the home side began to take control.

On 37 minutes, a quality pass from Will Clapham found Watson, who turned brilliantly before finding the bottom corner to complete the turnaround.

Clapham almost added a spectacular third before the break, unleashing a long-range effort which crashed back off the crossbar.

Half-time: Wolviston FC 2–1 FC Hartlepool Reserves.

Wolvo came flying out after the restart and needed just three minutes to extend the lead. Clapham forced a save from the Hartlepool keeper and Harry Minto reacted quickest to sweep home the rebound for 3–1.

The pressure continued, with Wolviston looking increasingly dangerous as the game opened up.

On 67 minutes, Minto turned provider with a superb pass into James Webb, who showed great composure to finish and give Wolvo a commanding three-goal advantage.

The hosts continued to play on the front foot, using the ball well and introducing fresh legs without allowing the intensity to drop.

And there was still time for one more.

In the 90th minute, Sam Simpson found Webb, who turned his man before smashing home a brilliant finish for his second of the afternoon and Wolvo’s fifth.

Full-time: Wolviston FC 5–1 FC Hartlepool Reserves.

A hugely positive afternoon at Metcalfe Park. Wolvo responded superbly to going behind, scored five through four different scorers and grew stronger and stronger as the match went on.

Laylan Donachie was named Man of the Match after an outstanding performance down the left. Solid defensively throughout, full of energy going forward and heavily involved in starting attacks, he was also desperately unlucky not to add a couple of goals of his own.

Five goals. Three points. A proper Wolvo performance.
