Easington Lane Reserves 0–3 Wolviston FC

Wolviston FC safely booked their place in the next round of the Durham Minor Cup on Saturday afternoon, overcoming Easington Lane Reserves with an impressive 3–0 victory at Murton CW.

Three different goalscorers, a clean sheet and some excellent attacking football made it a productive afternoon for Wolvo, who had to show their resilience in the closing stages after being reduced to ten men.

Wolvo make a bright start

Wolviston wasted little time getting on the front foot, creating a series of early opportunities as they looked to take control of the cup tie.

Inside the opening three minutes, James Webb tested home goalkeeper Adam Pawley, who was equal to the effort.

Easington Lane responded four minutes later when Rob Purvis tried his luck, but his effort was comfortably dealt with.

Joshua Chambers nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute, narrowly missing the target with a shot that went just wide of the post.

Jake Large was next to try his luck, firing an effort from distance in the 18th minute that cleared the crossbar.

The hosts weren’t without their chances, though. On 20 minutes, Wolviston goalkeeper Kieran Ezard produced an excellent save with his legs to deny Kymani Severin, before pulling off another important stop three minutes later to keep out a close-range effort from Max Fitzpatrick.

Those saves proved crucial, as Wolvo were about to make their attacking pressure count.

Two goals in six minutes put Wolvo in control

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute.

Following some good work from Charlie Thompson, Joshua Chambers found himself in a dangerous position and made no mistake, firing home from around 15 yards to give Wolviston a deserved lead.

With their tails up, Wolvo continued to push forward and doubled their advantage just six minutes later.

Jake Large turned provider, finding James Webb, who finished well to make it 2–0 and give the visitors a commanding advantage.

It was an excellent spell for Wolviston, who had turned their attacking opportunities into goals while remaining alert to the threat at the other end.

Thompson adds a third as Wolvo turn the screw

Wolviston started the second half brightly, with Joshua Chambers involved again almost immediately.

In the 47th minute, he burst through on goal and looked set to add to his tally, only for Pawley to produce a fine save, tipping his effort over the crossbar.

Just a minute later, Ollie Taylor received a yellow card, an incident that would become significant later in the afternoon.

Wolviston soon extended their advantage, though, with Charlie Thompson adding a third in the 49th minute to put the visitors firmly in control of the tie.

Thompson was causing further problems for the Easington Lane defence and almost grabbed another in the 58th minute, only to be denied by another impressive save from Pawley, who tipped his shot over the bar.

Despite their three-goal advantage, Wolviston continued to look for opportunities to add to the scoreline.

Ten-man Wolvo finish the job

The afternoon took an unexpected turn in the 68th minute when Ollie Taylor was shown a second yellow card and subsequently sent off, leaving Wolviston to complete the remainder of the match with ten men.

Wolvo responded by making changes, with Jacob Watson replacing James Webb and Harry Minto coming on for Bailey Geldart.

Even with a man down, the visitors continued to pose an attacking threat.

Marcus Allen broke through on goal in the 73rd minute, but once again Pawley came to Easington Lane’s rescue with another fine save.

Wolviston made a further change in the 85th minute, with James Webb returning to the action in place of Marcus Allen.

The hosts were unable to find a way back into the contest, with Wolviston seeing out the closing stages to secure a convincing victory and a well-earned clean sheet.

Full-time: Easington Lane Reserves 0–3 Wolviston FC

A job well done – and into the next round!

A thoroughly positive afternoon for Wolvo, who delivered an impressive attacking performance, scored three well-taken goals and demonstrated the determination needed to finish the match with ten players.

There were plenty of positives across the pitch.

Joshua Chambers, James Webb and Charlie Thompson shared the goals, while Jake Large played an important part in creating opportunities and was rewarded for his contribution with the Man of the Match award.

At the other end, Kieran Ezard’s two important first-half saves helped establish the platform for victory, while the defence ensured the hosts couldn’t find a way back into the game.

Credit must also go to Easington Lane goalkeeper Adam Pawley, whose series of impressive saves prevented Wolviston from adding further goals.

For Wolviston, it’s another cup victory to celebrate, another clean sheet in the bag and, most importantly, a place in the next round of the Durham Minor Cup.

Three goals. Clean sheet. Cup progression. Job done!
